Travel Memory- Alaska

"Alaska Watch" © Johanna Bohoy, 2014, pastel.

Alaska watch

Out come the cameras and phones. Almost tipping the boat into waves.

Capturing mountains and glaciers ahead.

And a humpback? an otter? an Orca? a seal?

Sights to see and send home.

Heading to Surprise Glacier, Alaska

"Surprise Glacier" © Johanna Bohoy, 2014, Watercolor, 20 x 16

Surprise

It's a glacier.

An ice sculpture framed by the mountains.

Groaning, cracking, spouting, melting- calving into the sound.

Baby blue reflected from the sky above.

Chunks of ice swim over to greet us.

Little ships built by hundreds of years of compressed snow- now set sail.

A wonder of nature before our eyes.

Surprise Glacier, Alaska.

"Hatcher Passe" © Johanna Bohoy, 2014, pastel.

There's gold in them there hills...

Hatcher Pass, Alaska.

Through the rolling hills and roiling mist a shrouded vestige of the past appears.

Peaks of red that sheltered the miners of the Alaska Pacific Mining Company dot the velvety green pass.

Ghostly mists and fog and clouds hover above, all secretly holding the stories

of the men seeking their fortunes that came to a halt during WWII.

Eerily beautiful.

Oscars Red Carpet 2023- Gloved & Glamorous- by Bohoy

Gloved & Glamourous

Like the turn of the century ladies, when gloves were de rigueur for proper etiquette, and were objects of luxury, elegance and refinement, these stars covered their arms on the runway. But it was not for the reason of etiquette (note the exposed shoulders & decollage)— it was all about the fashion.

Laverne Cox, Ruth E. Carter, Emily Blunt and Deepika Padukone.

Travel memories- Ireland dawns by J. Bohoy

From a trip to Ireland, too long ago:

It's dawn.

Aqua mist reveals:

the hills; the castle; the velvet greens.

the moss, the mounds; a mirrored lake.

A silent Irish beauty.

1974, Acrylic, 26x26

Artist's collection.

 In an Irish cottage:

A rich little place.
Blossoms on walls envelop the room.
With treasures of paintings, furniture, and lace.
Touring the cottage- no one's around.
She looks in the mirror- not to be found.

1974, Acrylic 36 x 39

Happy St Patrick's Day!

The Swans are back- by J. Bohoy

The swans are back.

Boston Ballet brings them.

The Opera House stage.

Feathers fly: Odette and Odile vie for the prince.

Good vs evil.

A sea of white glides on Swan Lake as my favorite Tchaikovsky music swells.

Pastel paintings done previously in 2008 to 2014. Prints available.

Oscars Red Carpet 2022-Yelo & Blue- Bohoy

It seems frivolous to focus on fashion when we think of the devastation happening in the Ukraine– but it has been my tradition for 15 years to do a runway painting each year– so I am capturing those who wore yellow and blue- to honor their flag.

My painting "Group Hug" was just awarded "Artwork Best Representing Theme" in the Historic Beverly exhibit "Strength, Perseverance and Hope" which emphasized our pandemic experience.
The art was judged by art specialists, but also by some people from the local community– which made it even more special to me.

My other painting "Last Hug," also in the exhibit, depicted the show's theme as well– almost more so, as it features a good friend who truly experienced strength, perseverance and hope.

In Bermuda there was beautiful young schoolgirl on a bus dressed in brights that matched the houses and flowers that whizzed by. I did not see that she was black. I saw a colorful child that I needed to paint.

When I had my very first job as a teen painting signs in Corning, New York I saw a hilarious man that I respected who was my first boss. I did not see that he was black.

When I hired a photographer at my first design job in Boston I saw a talented, wonderful man who took the creative photos that I needed. I did not see that he was black.

It wasn’t even a thought in my head each time. NOT  THOUGHT.

What is wrong with those in our world that don’t see a person as a person.

Honors

A thank you on 9/11
I put up this painting in April in honor of the Covid workers, but now I revised it to include the firefighters and state troopers that came to our aid when our camper van burned on our way for a Labor Day vacation.
Since today is 9/11 it's a reminder of how appreciative we are, and should be, of our 1st responders.
Prayers for them as they fight the fires in California.

Island Breeze

Watercolor & gouache, 11x14
Island breeze.
Granada.
Filmy Curtains billow.
Exposing the verdant view.
No AC, no fans.
For the gentle winds caress.
Light air fluffs the dress for night.
A tropical drink in sight.

I accidentally found this YouTube video of a child reading my children's book "The Nothing Zoo" and it is so cute that I have to share it.
Adorable.

And here are some other illustrations from the book.
Note: I did this many years ago and had followup books on the environment, but at that time publishers weren't interested in saving our planet. So.... they sit in a drawer. A sad commentary on the industry. If anyone is interested in backing my books, let me know.
